Block Instagram
Instagram is the hardest app to block, for a reason that has nothing to do with mechanics: it does two jobs. Reels take your evenings, messages keep you in touch with people you love, and no system can separate the two. This guide says what that really implies before suggesting a setting.
The problem: a block covers the whole app
This is true everywhere, not just in Tempo. iOS and Android block an app, never one of its tabs: not Apple’s Screen Time, not Android’s Digital Wellbeing, not any blocker can shut Reels while leaving DMs open. Any promise to the contrary is false.
Two settings follow, and the right one depends on how you use the app:
- Block it outright — Instagram under lock, messages included, with a generous exchange rate (×2 or ×3) so thirty minutes of walking reopens it comfortably.
- Block the rest instead — leave Instagram open and lock the apps that carry no connection to anyone: TikTok, YouTube, games. Less virtuous on paper, more sustainable in practice.
What Tempo changes once Instagram is locked
You pick Instagram among your blocked apps; it stays installed, with its accounts and conversations. It no longer opens while your screen-minute balance is at zero, and that balance fills through your activity — running, walking, the gym, cycling — at the exchange rate you chose.
There is nothing to unlock: as soon as the balance is positive, the app opens as usual. The minutes you spend inside drain it, and at zero everything shuts again — on iPhone, iOS does that on its own, with Tempo closed for hours.
The notification catch
A blocked app keeps notifying: those banners come from the system, not the app, and Tempo has no say over them. A notification calling you towards a shut app is the worst of both worlds — so if Instagram goes under lock, the very next setting to change is its notifications, in your phone’s settings. Tempo cannot do that for you.

How much activity buys an evening
At a ×1 rate, thirty minutes of walking buy thirty minutes of Instagram. With no watch, a thousand steps are worth about ten minutes of walking, paid at your lane’s rate. In the free version, spending is capped at 60 screen minutes a day: past that, what you earn waits for tomorrow. The simulator on the home page runs the numbers with yours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I block Reels without blocking messages?
No, and nobody can: both systems block a whole app, not one of its tabs. Blocking Instagram closes DMs too. That’s the honest trade-off of blocking — and why many people keep a gentle exchange rate rather than a total block.
Does Instagram reopen on its own once I’ve earned minutes?
Yes. There is nothing to unlock: as soon as your balance is positive, every blocked app opens normally. Credit lands even without opening Tempo, at the end of a workout or as your steps add up.
Does it work without a watch?
Yes: your phone’s steps become the currency, and Tempo then sets a floor so walking alone still funds something. It’s actually the case where the counter is most faithful, since the phone is on you.
