Block TikTok

TikTok isn’t an app you open: it’s an app you wake up inside. The feed has no end, so a session has no natural end — nothing in the product ever tells you it’s over. Here’s how to put that ending somewhere other than your willpower.

Why TikTok’s own reminders don’t hold

TikTok ships its own tools: screen time management, break reminders, a sleep screen. They all share the flaw of every system limit — they ask politely. The reminder lands at the worst possible moment, the one where you’re already in, and one tap dismisses it. Your tired self is the referee, against a feed tuned to beat it.

Deleting the app works better, but it costs a lot: you lose your messages, your drafts, the accounts you follow — and you reinstall it in thirty seconds on a weak evening. The missing middle ground is an app that stays installed but shut, whose opening has a price.

Blocking TikTok behind your own activity

With Tempo, TikTok is one of the apps you put under lock. It stays installed. It no longer opens while your screen-minute balance sits at zero — and that balance fills one way only: by moving.

  • You choose the exchange rate at setup: one minute of activity for one minute of screen, or for two, or for three.
  • Credit lands without opening Tempo: the end of a workout wakes the app, and your steps are read through the day.
  • The balance is shared across every blocked app: twenty minutes earned are twenty minutes to split between TikTok, Instagram and the rest — not twenty per app.
  • At zero, everything shuts again, with Tempo closed. On iPhone, iOS handles that itself.

With no watch, your steps pay: a thousand steps are worth about ten minutes of walking. An ordinary 6,000-step day already funds a real session — and a day spent sitting funds none, which is exactly the useful signal.

What a month looks like

Thirty-five minutes of activity a day, at a ×1 rate, buy 35 minutes of feed a day. Over a month, starting from the 2 h 30 daily global average, that’s around 57 fewer hours of scrolling and 17 more hours of activity. Run the numbers with your own figures on the home page.

The honest part: what Tempo doesn’t do

Tempo is not parental control. You can uninstall it, and the block goes with it — this is chosen self-restriction, not a prison. Strict mode (Tempo Pro) makes a loosened setting wait 24 hours, which puts a night between the urge and the gesture, but it doesn’t claim to lock you in.

And workouts entered by hand in Health or Health Connect don’t count. It’s the most obvious way to cheat this model; it’s closed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I block TikTok without deleting the app?

You pick it inside Tempo: the app stays installed, along with its messages and drafts, but it no longer opens while your minute balance is at zero. Nothing is deleted, nothing is lost.

How much exercise buys ten minutes of TikTok?

At a ×1 rate, ten minutes of activity. At ×2, five. With no watch, a thousand steps are worth about ten minutes of walking, paid at your lane’s rate — walking counts for half of an intense session.

What about tiktok.com in the browser?

On iPhone, Apple’s picker also offers websites: you can add tiktok.com to your selection and the block applies in Safari. On Android, blocking covers apps only for now.
